  • The King is dead. Senior Advocate Mr. S. Venkiteshwaran passes away

    Senior advocate Mr. S. Venkiteshwaran born on January 22, 1941 passed away on December 21, 2013 night. He was considered to be the best shipping lawyer of the country, he ruled this sector as a king. He was enrolled as an Advocate by the Bar Council of Maharashtra, under the Advocates Act, 1961 on October 10, 1962 and had commenced law practice with Mr. Rajni Patel,  Bar-at-Law, in his chambers, and started independent practice in 1963.  After 1978, he had started specialising in Shipping and Aviation matters, since then he started dominating the shipping and aviation sector in India. Was designated as Senior Advocate by the Chief Justice and Judges of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay on December 21, 1988.

     

    He was a member of a committee constituted by the Government of India for updating the law relating to Admiralty; Committee constituted by Ministry of Surface Transport to review the Merchant Shipping Act; World Bank Group for advising the Government of India (MOST) to prepare draft tender documents and contract for privatization of container terminal of JNPT; Committee constituted by Government of India for review of the Indian Ports Act 1908 and the Major Port Trusts Act 1963; Drafted, for the Indian Ports Association, rules framed by the Government of India under section 6 of the Indian Ports Act called rules relating to “Ingress, Egress and Stay of vessels in Ports in India”; Committee constituted by Government of India for drafting proposed legislations for Coastal Shipping; Committee head of the National Shipping Board constituted by the Government of India for drafting a new Merchant Shipping legislation. He had been arbitrator and umpire in several arbitration proceedings.

    He was a recipient  of  Varuna  Award  2004,  the  highest  Award  instituted  by  the  Government  of  India  in recognition of services to the Indian shipping industry.
